Interrupted by Peace: Finding Calm in Anxiety

Let’s talk about anxiety.

As much as I don’t want to admit it, throughout my life its been a constant. A battle that I fight every single day.

There are days when I don’t even notice it and there are others where I can’t sleep because the noise in my head, the fears and the worries are just too loud.

Today was one of those days.

After my morning devotion, I opened my family group chat. Each day my mum sends a quote from a calendar that sits on her shelf. Today’s went like this:

“A negative thinker sees a difficulty in every opportunity. A positive thinker sees an opportunity in every difficulty”

I thought to myself, “I resonate with the negative thinkers, but that’s not who I want to be.”

I forced myself out of bed got ready and off I went. As I arrived at my desk this morning. I opened instagram, as you do. Procrastinating I guess.

I was met with a prayer similar to this

God, let your peace interrupt my worry. Amen

Woah.

Answer these questions for me:

  • How many times has worry interrupted your train of thought?
  • How many times has panic reared it’s ugly head unannounced?
  • How many times have simple tasks turned into sudden overwhelm?

I’ve been there. Let me be honest, i’m still there.

I think that’s why i’m writing this post and that’s why i’m sharing this with you right now.

Because this morning I realised that God’s peace is powerful enough to interrupt my worry.

Please read that again

God’s peace is powerful enough to interrupt my worry.

Read Philippians 4:6-7 in three different versions, see which one speaks to your heart the most.

NKJV
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

NLT
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

AMP
Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].

God’s peace is powerful enough to interrupt my worry.

I don’t want to live my life interrupted by fear and anxiety. I want to be interrupted by peace. And I can be. God told me so.

It’s available for you too, if you just ask.
