The Power Of Words: How Words Affect Our Mental Health

What‘s the worst thing someone’s ever said to you?

I've had my fair share of phrases encased in hand grenades thrown at me in my time.

  • ”Go back to where you came from”

  • ”I knew you’d do anything I’d ask you to, so I used you...”

  • ”I bought a souvenir for Laura and it only cost 50p, that’s all she‘s worth anyway!”

These three are my personal faves 😞

That stupid saying we’re taught as kids - sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me - it’s all lies!

I wish we as humans had better filters. I wish we stuck to the phrase - 'if you have nothing good to say don’t say anything!' I wish we thought about the things we said before we said them, but for some reason there seems to be a disconnect, somewhere between the thought and it escaping the lips.

Words hurt! They can actually destroy us.

There's this stigma in society that says, 'if we can’t see the pain it doesn’t really exist'. I’m here to tell you that emotional pain is still pain. It still hurts and it still has a deadly effect on both our physical and mental health.

Bible Verses About The Power Of Words

The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.

Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.

The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowingbrook.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Here are just a few verses in the Bible that tell us about the power of the tongue. What we say holds both death and life; our words are like deep waters but can also be like a tree of life. If we answer softly we can stop arguments but if we answer with wrath we can stir up anger. Through hypocritical speak we can ruin others but if we speak words of wisdom we can deliver others.

What Do Your Words Say About You?

Proverbs 16:24 stands out to me the most. When I think of honey I think sweet, sticky, luxurious, golden, bright and tasty. When you speak are your words:

  • Sweet or sour?

  • Do they stick in a good way or a bad way?

  • Do they add value or subtract value from those who hear them?

  • Do they shine bright like gold or cover things in black ash?

  • Do others smile or frown when you speak?

  • Do others want to hear you speak again or wish you never opened your mouth

Take time to ask God to reveal to you what your words say about you. Let the Holy Spirit do some heart work and search inside to see what in your life needs to change in order for you to be more like Jesus.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting. - Psalm 139:23-24
