How To Trust God, Even In Difficult Times

Coronavirus news has dominated news stations for weeks now and some people even think that the media is blowing things out of proportion to scare people.

As Christians, while we try to be strong, our human nature sometimes results in us feeding into all of the stories that we read and watch daily and we may slip into feelings of fear.

So how can we have peace in the midst of all that’s going on right now?

Well, let’s look at Psalm 46.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear…” Psalm 46:1-2

Let’s break these two verses down.

God is…

  1. Our refuge – When I think of the word refuge I think of a place that people go for safety, to hide from danger. In the midst of all that’s going on in the world today, we can be comforted by the fact that we can run to God and He will protect us from all dangers, toils and snares and even from this virus that’s running rampant trying to attack the world. We can find this refuge by taking a break from all of the coronavirus news and spending time in God’s word.

  2. Our strength – One text that makes me feel calm in the midst of stress is “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” -2 Corinthians 12:9. In the midst of our weakness, God’s strength is revealed. When we go through difficult times we can rest assured the God we serve is so strong that even when we feel we cannot go on, He will come through for us and turn things around. In order for God’s strength to be revealed, we must first take our hand off of the steering wheel and let God be God. Let Him do His thing and stop trying to interfere in what you know you should be leaving in God’s hands.

  3. A very present help – In English class, we learn about various tenses, past, present and future. Interestingly, this text does not just say that God is our help but that He is a very present help in trouble. This means that even in this very moment, in the presentif you call on the name of God, He will help you get through whatever situation you may be going through right now. God wants to be a part of our lives. He wants to be there for us but we must first seek Him and welcome Him into our lives.

So knowing that God is your refuge, strength and a very present help in trouble, what does that mean for you?

DO NOT FEAR!

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” - 2 Timothy 1:7

In the midst of all that’s going on in the world, we have no reason to fear because God did not give us a spirit of fear. We should hide in Him because He is our refuge. He will fight our battles for us because He is our strength. He will be there for us because He is a very present help. Knowing this means we can have power because we know that we have God with us, we can show love to others because God has shown us the greatest love and we can have a sound mind because God has given us true peace. When we know that our strength comes from God, we will be able to experience perfect peace.
