Of all the women to choose, Mary seems like the most clique, expected and most spoken about woman. Before you skip through the rest of the blog post take time to read why she’s one of the most extraordinary women in the Bible.
Chosen for greatness
First of all, she accepted a challenge from God that may have left her disowned by her family, shamed by her community, isolated and counted as a lunatic. She was genuinely carrying the Saviour of the world but how were people to believe that? Even up until His death and still today there are people that don’t believe that Jesus is the Messiah. Mary took on a task that no other woman will ever understand or experience. She was truly one of a kind and I am confident it takes an incredible woman to be chosen by God to do something like that.
A life fully surrendered
Secondly, she put herself aside and chose to follow God. Did you ever think that Mary may have had her own plans? Her own dreams? Her own goals? Her own desires? All of those things had to be surrendered to God because she was chosen for something bigger. If you have ever surrendered anything to anyone then you’ll know it’s not the easiest thing in the world. Surrendering your entire life to God is what we as Christians are called to do. It’s not easy, it might not be fun, there may be some painful consequences but ultimately the blessings go beyond anything we could ever imagine. Mary is proof of that. Saved by her Son, the Saviour of the world.
Endurance through hardship
Thirdly, Mary walked beside her son from birth to death. She lost her husband along the way, she had other children to contend with who, even though they were growing up alongside Jesus, still didn’t understand His mission. She raised Him, cradled Him in her arms, fed Him, changed Him and watched that same baby be beaten, flogged, bruised and battered before her eyes. Mary was human, a woman just like you, or your mum, or your sister or your friend. But with God she achieved things that my mind can’t even fathom.
These are just a few of the many reasons why Mary is counted among the extraordinary women of the Bible. She is a someone many of us can learn so much from and her story is dotted along the pages of the greatest book in the world.
